Are 1944 steel pennies rare?

During the circulation of the 1944 Wheat Cent, a rare variation, the 1944 Steel Pennies became popular as a striking error coin. It so happened that while minting 1944 wheat pennies, the makers at all three mints somehow stuffed the leftover zinc-coated steel planchets from the 1942 war cent series. And the result was a rare 1944 Steel Wheat Penny.

How much does a 1944 s Penny weigh?

All Wheat Pennies measure 19.05mm in diameter and have a smooth, un-reeded edge. But while brass 1944-S Pennies weigh 3.11g, the two steel 1944-S Pennies are slightly lighter at 2.7g. Since these coins contained no copper, they had the silver sheen of nickels and dimes. In fact, they were often mistaken for dimes.
